India picks "Laapataa Ladies" for Oscar Best International Feature competition

"Laapataa Ladies" is India's official entry to the Oscars 2025
25 Sep - After much deliberation, India has decided to pick Kiran Rao's comedy, "Laapataa Ladies" as its representative film for the 2025 Oscar's Best International Feature.

The Hindi movie, which premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival bested other contenders that include Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light", despite the latter's success at the Cannes Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prize.

It also won against "Maharaja", the Vijay Sethupathi-starrer that is currently the most streamed Indian movie on Netflix.

"Laapataa Ladies" tells the story of Jaya and Phool, two new brides who get accidentally swapped while travelling on the train to their groom's places, seeing that they both were veiled and wearing the same clothes.

Produced by Aamir Khan alongside ex-wife Kiran Rao, "Laapaata Ladies" has received positive review. Following news of its selection for the Oscars, Kiran took to social media to express happiness over the selection.
