12 Sep - Shailene Woodley is set to portray Janis Joplin in an upcoming biopic that she will produce herself.

The actress revealed on 10 September that she has received a commitment for a USD 2.49 million tax credit from the California Film Commission for the film.

"I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear, zipping down the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her," she said in her statement.

Woodley added, "Thank you to the California Film Commission's Film & Television Tax Credit Program - myself and the other producers on this project believe California is the only place to film a slice of Janis's life with authenticity and truth - and we are so grateful to have received the green light to do so!"

The upcoming biopic will be the first to be produced since Joplin's passing at the age of 27 in 1970. However, it is noted that there had been few attempts at making a movie about her in the past, with actresses like Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink and Melissa Etheridge on board.

Known for her powerful vocals, Joplin had released a number of hit songs during her heyday in the late 1960s, including "Piece of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Little Girl Blue", and "Me and Bobby McGee".

The singer was found dead on the floor of her room at the Landmark Motor Hotel in October 1970, with coroner Thomas Noguchi determining the cause of death to be a heroin overdose, possibly compounded by alcohol.

She was 27.
