28 Nov - Universal Pictures has denied rumours that there is a pay disparity between the two "Wicked" leads, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

In a statement released to the media, Universal's spokesperson said, "Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder. The women received equal pay for their work on Wicked."

The statement came amid rumours circulating on TikTok and Reddit that Grande was paid USD 15 million to play Glinda, while Erivo received only USD 1 million for her performance as Elphaba.

The rumours had since sparked heated discussion, with some agreeing to the rumoured hefty pay as Grande is a pop star while Erivo was relatively unknown to the global audience prior to her casting as Elphaba. While others slammed the notion saying that they worked equally hard in their roles.

It is noted that in a previous interview, director Jon M. Chu admitted that he was hesitant about casting Grande at first because of her pop stardom.

However, the team changed their minds after seeing how funny the former "Victorious" actress was and how dedicated Grande was to playing the role of her dream.
