2 Sep - Cathay Cineplexes, one of Singapore's most known cinema operators, has announced that it will cease operations and enter creditors' voluntary liquidation amid financial struggles.

An official statement was released on 1 September, stating, "Pursuant to a director's resolution dated 1 September 2025, the Company has been placed into provisional liquidation. Messrs. Tan Kim Han and Luke Furler of Quantuma (Singapore) Pte Ltd have been appointed as Joint and Several Provisional Liquidators of the Company."


"Cathay Cineplexes Pte Ltd has ceased operations with immediate effect. All future correspondence relating to the Company should be directed to: Kyer.cooper@quantuma.com"

The closure affects all four multiplex locations across the island, comprising a total of 29 cinema screens. The decision marks a significant turning point in Singapore's entertainment landscape, as Cathay Cineplexes has been a longstanding player in the local film exhibition industry.

mm2 Asia earlier reported a surge in group net loss to SGD 122.4 million in the 2025 fiscal year, which is a a substantial increase from its SGD 1.9 million loss in the year before. They confirmed that rising operational costs, declining audience numbers, and unsustainable debt have made continued operations impossible.

The news came following the announcement that The Projector, Singapore's independent cinema and arts venue, will enter voluntary liquidation after more than a decade of programming.
