6 Mar - Jon M. Chu recently explained that the richness of every character in "Crazy Rich Asians" is the reason why they have decided to go the TV series way.

Speaking to the media on the Oscars red carpet earlier, Chu said that the team need "more real estate" to tell the story in completion.

"We developed the movie over and over and over again and we're still working on a version of something that I won't talk about now, but the TV landscape allowed us to use all the characters," he said.

Chu added, "I don't know if it's in lieu of a sequel but it felt clear that every character we wanted to explore needed more room and just a movie wasn't doing it for us. We got to bring Adele back into the fold and so we're starting this now, it's going to be fun."

It was last week that it was announced that "Crazy Rich Asians" screenwriter Adele Lim will be the showrunner of the series, which will be a part of the HBO Max roster.

However, Chu said that he is not letting go of a movie sequel yet despite producing the upcoming series.

The movie, released in 2018, is an adaptation of the first book from Kevin Kwan's trilogy that include "Crazy Rich Asians", "China Rich Girlfriend" and "Rich People Problems". It stars Constance Wu as New Yorker Rachel Chu who finds out that her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) is actually from an extremely wealthy Singaporean family.
