8 Jul - As Prada continues to drew flak from Indians everywhere for their recent new footwear line that resembles the Kolhapuri sandals (aka chappal), Kareena Kapoor has recently joined in to show her support for the local footwear.

On 6 July, the actress posted a photo showing off her pair of Kolhapuri sandals while lounging near a pool overlooking the sea, and wrote, "Sorry not Prada... but my OG kolapuri."

Prada sparked anger among Indians after unveiling the sandals as part of the Men's Spring/Summer 2025 collection, with many calling the brand out for appropriation.

The fashion house was also slammed for not acknowledging the traditional craft or the artisans engaged in the making of the sandals.

The backlash prompted Prada, that previously described the sandals as "leather footwear", to acknowledge the inspiration behind the new collection.

A Prada spokesperson said that the company has "always celebrated craftsmanship, heritage and design traditions" and that it is in contact with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture on this topic.

Made by the artisans of Kolhapur in Maharashtra as early as the 12th century, Kolhapuri chappals are hand-crafted from leather and tanned using vegetable dyes.

They were awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Indian government in 2019.
