29 Apr - It looks like there will be no big screen adaptation for DC's rogue squad "The Authority" for the time being, as James Gunn revealed that development on the project has been halted temporarily.

The director and co-head of DC Studios shared that piece of information via Threads, saying, "I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn't quite there but more importantly it didn't work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns."

"Maybe someday. Not soon," he added.

This isn't the first time that Gunn has expressed hesitation regarding the project, saying that it has had a sluggish development.

"It is a very big movie, if you're going to do it properly. Some of the story elements perhaps that are in Superman and some of the other films we fast-tracked, step a little on The Authority ... [It's] the one that got messed with through all of the other things that were happening. The script had a harder time coming along," he said at a DC press day last year.

"The Authority" was first announced as one of Gunn's projects when he first came to the job with Peter Safran in January 2023.

The said comic book series was created in 1999 by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, and follows the adventures of the Authority, a superhero team mainly composed of Ellis-created characters from "StormWatch". Among the members include Jenny Sparks, who created the group with Swift and Jack Hawksmoor, as well as other characters like Deathblow, Engineer, and Manchester Black.
