13 May - Kamal Haasan has recently sung praises for the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay, following the former actor-turned-politician's order for the closure of 717 liquor shops located within 500 metres of temples, schools and bus stands across the state.

The actor-producer shared his thoughts on the decision via X, congratulating his "Brother Vijay" and writing, "Even as the expectation of Tamil families was that liquor retail shops near places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stands should be removed, Hon'ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Brother Vijay @TVKVijayHQ has taken this action immediately upon assuming office."

"Liquor sales should never be a function of the government; the government must take responsibility for regulating the flow of alcohol. The Tamil Nadu government must move towards this position. Today, it has begun by closing 717 liquor shops. This number must be increased. This action must be continued."

The action was considered the first step towards fulfilling TVK's promise for a more controlled "addiction-free" environment. These shops are operated by Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) with a total of 4,765 in the state. 276 of them are near places of worship, 186 are near educational institutions, and 255 are near bus stands.
