5 May - Following criticisms over the lack of involvement of the original directors, it was reported that Lionsgate will now have "The Blair Witch Project" filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick as executive producers.

Sanchez and Myrick are also joined by Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, the two original actors of the 1999 found footage film, also as executive producers.

The upcoming film was first announced at CinemaCon in 2024 by the studio as well as the horror banner, Blumhouse, with Lionsgate's Adam Fogelson stating that the new version will reintroduce the classic to the new generation.

The announcement was received with frustration by Leonard, who revealed that the original team was not approached at all about the new movie.

He stated that there had been "25 years of disrespect from the folks who've pocketed the lion's share (pun intended) of the profits from OUR work, and that feels both icky and classless."

It is noted that the original, which was made with only USD 35,000 budget (sans marketing) collected USD 248 million at the global box office, and kicked off a whole new trend of found footage films.
