This Swedish whodunit isn't a masterpiece but by golly will you be asking for the 180-minute extended version as soon as you're through it! Adapted from Stieg Larsson's acclaimed crime novels, this "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is the first movie instalment of a mystery trilogy, the other two being "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest".

In the movie, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) is a writer who recently loses a libel case against corrupt Swedish industrialist Hans-Erik Wennerström (Stefan Sauk) and is sentenced to jail. Mikael is hired by dying Vanger group patriarch Henrik (Sven-Bertil Taube) to solve the 40-year-old mystery of his missing great-niece Harriet. Our hero meets bi-sexual punk computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) and together they discover shocking revelations about the Vanger family.

It's an engrossing thriller of a drama with very intense overtones of misogyny, sexual violence and abandonment, to put it mildly. In fact, the Swedish literal title means "Men who hate women", so you can bet the R21 rating in Singapore means business. Gruesome and graphic, some of the sequences in this first part will really destroy all notions you might have had about how advanced or crimeless Sweden is as a First World country with the foremost living standards!

We also have to single out Noomi Rapace for a sharp performance; you can read that she has done everything from getting a bike license, going for kickboxing lessons and putting herself on a strict diet and piercing her face as part of a seven-month preparation for her role as the deeply traumatised goth girl. Her commitment must echo the work of the whole team that brought us this film, as it couldn't be easy to shoot such an elaborate adaptation.

Popular complaints about "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" from those who read the books include how the lead pair isn't very charming or attractive (especially Nvqvist), a problem that causes a chemistry hiccup that will surely be addressed once Hollywood gets their hands on the remake rights. Yes, this Euro "Silence Of The Lambs" will make a great U.S. release, so let's hope they can make a punchier movie out of it.
