"Paul" is about two English sci-fi geeks, who head over to the annual Comic Con gathering in San Diego to check out the shrine of all alien hotspots; Area 51. While trespassing on the site they're clearly not supposed to be around, they stumble upon an alien named Paul that's voiced by Seth Rogen ("The Green Hornet"). After the shocking yet awkward encounter, the three then go on a road trip to help Paul return to his planet as a special government agent chases after them.
"Paul" is the hilarious brainchild of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost who both wrote the screenplay. They also lead the ensemble that consists of well-known sci-fi alumnus such as "Alien's" Sigourney Weaver. Steven Spielberg who wrote and directed the popular "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", also makes a cameo in the movie. Comic geeks will notice the various comic book artists who appear in the movie, such as Ryan Ottley, Cory Walker and Robert Kirkman.
Other than just the cool cameos, "Paul" pays homage to some of the popular sci-fi movies ranging from the "Star Wars" franchise and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", which defines most of the sci-fi genre today, as they were the defining benchmarks of their time.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, having worked together in movies like "Shawn Of The Dead" and "Hot Fuzz", have created an unusual comedic chemistry between them, and with the addition of comedian Seth Rogen into the mix, it really is the icing on the cake.
The reviewer feels that Paul who's the only computer generated character in the movie, really provides a decent balance, as movies with plenty of CGI effects takes away the whole point of the story, as people will watch the movie for its effects rather than the plot and the storyline.
Overall, this movie is truly a haven for all sci-fi lovers. With references to some of the popular sci-fi movies, to cameos from well-known personalities, sit back and relax as you get ready for the ultimate geek showdown!
