Ram Gopal Varma's "Raktha Charithram" is a gruesome revenge drama based on a real life incident in Andhra Pradesh, India. The original Hindi version has two parts, whereby this Tamil version is an elaboration of the second part of the film, voiced over by director Gautham Menon who narrates the introduction of part one of the film.

Narisimha (Kitty) and Veerabhadran are both politicians in Anandhapura. Notwithstanding their relationship, fellow party member Nagamani (Kota Srinivasa) plots a conspiracy on them and kills Veerabhadran. Veerabhadran's son Prathap Ravi (Vivek Oberoi) then takes revenge on both Narisimha and Nagamani by brutally killing them. Prathap with the help of another politician joins a political party and forms his own mafia group, leading him to many killings and murders which becomes part of his life in Anandhapura.

Meanwhile, Narasimha's son Suriya (Suriya) attempts to avenge his family's murder by planting a bomb in Prathap's car but fails and eventually surrenders to the police due and continues to hatch plans behind bars to assassinate Prathap. What happens next are revenge and counter-revenge episodes as people on both sides are murdered in the most gruesome manner. Whether Suriya succeeds in his mission and what happens to his life forms the rest of story.

Both Suriya and Vivek's performance are outstanding as they manage to deliver their characters well. Vivek's body language is effective as a politician cum gangster, while Suriya's emotional scenes upon seeing the death of his loved ones proved noteworthy.

Ram Gopal Varma manages to deliver raw, realistic, in-your-face emotion with suspenseful scenes like when Suriya is escorted to court and the prison fight. On the downside, the film contains too much gruesome violence which may not be suitable for some audiences and is watchable only if you like blood and gore.
