Larry Crowne

Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he`s worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colourful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves, often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.

Watch this if you liked: “American Beauty”

"Larry Crowne" is a movie starring Hollywood icons Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks - two very likeable, huggable and bankable stars... twenty years ago!

So it's no surprise then that this movie is an adult-skewing pic that Universal Pictures reported to have registered a 71% high of audiences aged over 50, when it was released over the Fourth Of July weekend Stateside. However, without the class or depth of something like "American Beauty", it is best summarised as a muted dramedy with no real reward nor resounding fun, as if it wasn't already difficult to spin a refreshing new tale about a man's midlife crisis and his redemption via a community college enrolment programme and an unlikely romantic interest.

Let's give it to the man. This is probably a movie with good intentions but the screen treatment applied by director Tom Hanks to his own script (co-written with Nia Vardalos from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding") is consistently underhitting every note and not to very good effect. Many would think that "Larry Crowne" has the potential to endear itself to audiences, with the state of the American economy but the lightness of it all, while not particularly boring, is rather un-compelling to watch and reeks of vacuous MTV moments.

These criticisms should in no way be levelled at the leading pair, who have concededly done well to remedy their abrupt characters arcs by lending their winsome smiles and distinctive screen presence. Even the supporting cast clocked committed performances - Cedric The Entertainer as a standoffish neighbour, Taraji P. Henson as Hanks' college mate, Bryan Cranston as Roberts' annoying husband and George Takei as the standout character of the movie - an unorthodox Economics lecturer. However, the effort here is largely underwhelming and in vain.

Oh well, at least Julia Roberts gets to wear some really gorgeous outfits throughout the movie. Watch out for cameos from Rita Wilson and Pam Grier as well.
