Jupiter Ascending

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along - her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Watch this if you liked: "Cloud Atlas", "The Matrix"

The Good, The Bad and The Out Of This World:
One should not expect to be blown away where the storyline of "Jupiter Ascending" is involved, but only when it comes to the visual effects, which is as dazzling as one would expect from the Wachowski siblings. The movie is hardly on the same level as how "The Matrix" managed to wow audiences with its highly detailed never-before-seen sequences, but it is however the next best thing and does have that very recognisable Wachowski method of storytelling and stylised shots.

If we're going to explore the cliches of where the dialogues and certain scenes are concerned, it's hardly anything to be surprised about, as looking back, "The Matrix" had tons of cliches too, only then it wasn't exactly following cliches, but creating them, hence it got away with a lot of nonsense. "Jupiter Ascending" reminds this reviewer of a fairytale that's set in a Space Opera film. Take Mila Kunis for instance, a Russian immigrant who scrubs toilets and suddenly finds out that she is destined for greatness, making her our Cinderella. Channing Tatum plays the intergalactic guy who comes to save her making him our Prince Charming, and Eddie Redmayne as the jealous evil prince who will stop at nothing to prevent Kunis' Jupiter Jones from taking the throne, is very much like Queen Grimhilde, Snow White's evil stepmother.

The Wachowski's have yet to deliver their best work as this is not it. But if you walk into the movie with no expectations and are prepared to be mesmerised by the epicness of the visuals, then you won't be sorry you had to endure the cliches and the mismatched pairing of Tatum and Kunis.
