The Good, the Bad and the Restless Spirits:

If you've watched the original 1982 version this remake is based on, then you'll be glad to know the modern take somewhat stays true to the original. Though the movie has upgraded the setting to modern time and changed the characters' names. A letdown will be the fact that technology has come a long way since the movie was first made, since the spirits moves through electricity, that aspect could've been utilised more in this remake (instead it only showcases the standard lights flickering on and off, and television sets giving off static).

However, in comparison to current horror movies, the acting and storyline are acceptable. The characters aren't mere caricatures of rebellious oldest teenage daughter/son, invisible middle child and bratty youngest baby - they're actually likeable, normal children. Though the character traits are a bit thwarted: it is weird amidst her sister's so-not-normal disappearance, Kendra finds time to joke and laugh about a famous ghostbuster visiting her house.

The movie is less gore (no gore, really) and more psychological, it messes with your mind with just the right amount of fear. There is no need to see blood on the screen to know that you won't be sleeping easy for the next few days (unless clowns and closets-that-eat-children don't scare you).

There's a heartwarming message of family love here, and the dialogues are good. Also, there are valid reasons for the ghosts to be haunting them and you won't be left wondering why some of the things in the movie even happened.

Look Out For:

Clowns. The poster already warns of it but it can still be alarming for Coulrophobics.

Trivia:

In the last scene, there's a bumper sticker on the Bowen vehicle that says Hooper High School. It is a direct reference to Tobe Hooper, the director of the 1982 original "Poltergeist".
