The Good, the Bad and the Demon Feline:

• Chinese auteur Chen Kaige has done it again with a visually rich film that is a feast for those cinematographically inclined.

• Narratively done in a 'whodunit' structure, the film however plays with the audiences mind in trying to figure out if the supernatural powers are really exhibited by the demon cat, or it is a man-made conspiracy.

• The CGI effects of the cat may raise some eyebrows, as it could've been done better and should've been designed to look less fake considering the colossal budget of the film. Even the usage of several black cats as the singular demon cat is blatantly noticed in the continuity of the story.

• This Tang Dynasty version of "Sherlock Holmes" gets most of its pleasure by watching the two leads, played by Huang Xuan and Shota Sometani, as they try to solve the puzzle of the demon cat.
