First Reformed

The small church in upstate New York that Reverend Ernst Toller is pastor of is on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary but its congregation is dwindling. It is eclipsed by its nearby parent church that has state-of-the-art facilities and a 5,000-strong congregation. One day, Toller is asked by a pregnant parishioner to counsel her husband, an unstable and radical environmental activist, but this only leads to the clergyman spiralling out of control as he plunges into his tormented past and just as bleak future. It is only through an act of grandiose violence that he finds redemption.
