It is 1941. Japanese-occupied China has become a wartime intelligence battlefield for the Allies and the Axis Powers. Iconic actress Jean Yu (Gong Li) returns to Shanghai, ostensibly to appear in the play "Saturday Fiction" to be directed by her former lover. It seems that she has been conscripted by the Allied spy ring. As she embarks on her mission and as everything spirals out of control, her true motivations become complicated as she learns of the imminent Pearl Harbour attack and struggles to differentiate friend from undercover enemy
