"Midsommar" duo to remake South Korean sci-fi comedy

9 May – South Korean movies have always been one of the more in demand foreign language titles in cinemas and the Oscar-winning success of "Parasite" has only boosted their popularity further.

Now CJ Entertainment, the production company behind "Parasite", is teaming up with Hollywood for an English-language remake of the Korean sci-fi comedy, "Save the Green Planet!".

Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, director and producer of critically acclaimed horror movies "Hereditary" and "Midsommar", have been tapped to produce the remake.

Aster announced the good news by sharing Deadline's report on it on his Twitter, simply captioned, "Excited about this one."

"When we heard that director Jang was passionate about revisiting this iconic work, bringing it to the US and updating it to reflect the mess of the world today (which feels even more ripe for this kind of apocalyptic skewering than when the film was first released), we leapt at the chance to be a part of it," said the duo, who will be producing it under their Square Peg production banner, along with CJ Entertainment.

Jang Joon-hwan, writer and director of the original movie, will be returning to helm the remake, with Will Tracy (HBO's "Succession") penning the adapted screenplay. Jang's last work with CJ was the 2017 political thriller "1987: When the Day Comes".

"Save the Green Planet!", released in Korea on 4 April 2003, starred Shin Ha-kyun ("Inseparable Bros") as Lee Byeong-gu, who thinks that the world is on the verge of an alien invasion and attempts to save the world by kidnapping a man that he believes is an extraterrestrial being.
