Peter Dinklage named as titular lead for a new fantasy movie

"Rumpelstiltskin" names "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage as its titular lead.

30 Jul – Peter Dinklage already has another fantasy-themed project to work on and it'll feature the actor as the movie's titular imp-like creature.

Dinklage is reported to be starring in the movie adaptation of the classic fairytale, "Rumpelstiltskin".

Variety brought news that the 49-year-old will also be producing the Sony Pictures project, which is currently in deep development, along with David Ginsberg under their Estuary Films banner.

It will not be Dinklage's immediate project after the conclusion of "Game of Thrones", the popular TV series he's starred in since 2011 as Tyrion Lannister, but it is said to be his and the studio's top priority.

Patrick Ness ("A Monster Calls") will be writing the script.

There have been various adaptations of the fairytale character in multiple media. It first appeared on the silver screen in 1915 and has had more than a dozen major and minor appearances in movies since.

One of its movie appearances in recent years is in "Shrek Forever After", as voiced by Walt Dohrn.

It also has a prominent feature on the small screen, most notably Robert Carlyle's personification of it in ABC television series, "Once Upon a Time".

There are no plot details revealed yet for Dinklage's version of "Rumpelstiltskin", so it is not known how closely it will stick to its source materials.

Rumpelstiltskin is an imp-like creature that was first introduced in a Brothers Grimm tale, in which a miller's daughter was shut in a tower after her father claimed to the king that she was able to spin straw into gold. Facing beheading by the king if she failed to show proof, she accepted Rumpelstiltskin's offer to help her, unaware of the consequences that followed her decision.
