12 Sep – It was announced that the shooting of the "Mortal Instruments" sequel, which is already in production, will be delayed. The production company stated that they will "analyze the results to date and reposition the franchise in order to maximize results for future installments". The predecessor, "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" adapted from Cassandra Clare's bestselling novel, cost $60 million (RM195 million) to produce but made only $37 million (RM120 million) worldwide. In its five-day opening, it only raked in a total of $14 million (RM46 million). The shooting of the sequel was supposed to start next week but the production company has yet to mention when it expects to resume shooting.
"Pushing back the start of production of "City of Ashes" was a decision we did not take lightly. But after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place. "The Mortal Instruments" series has an incredibly loyal and ardent fan base and is a best-selling book series. While taking Cassandra Claire's vision to the screen we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise," said executive producer Martin Moszkowicz of Constantin Film. Harald Zwart was set to direct the sequel like he had done for the first movie. The stars which include Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower and Kevin Zefers are set to return. Sigourney Weaver is also expected to join the cast.
